How To Install A ROM On A Samsung Galaxy S i9000M Bell From A Windows 7 Computer

Warning: Installing a custom recovery image and/or rom on the Samsung Galaxy S will void the warranty.

If you don't already have Kies installed on your computer grab a copy from Samsung's website (www.samsung.com) and install it because it has the drivers necessary to recognize the phone. You don't want the program running while trying install a rom.

Using Odin3 flash everything in folder "First Root" if first time rooting Galaxy S I9000 or you have accidentally buggered everything up while flashing a new firmware. See below for instructions.

To load other firmware copy .zip files to sd card on phone then shutdown phone (take battery out to confirm shutdown). Using 3 finger salute put phone in update mode, select "wipe data/factory reset, then select wipe cache partition, and install the zip files. Reboot. See below for instructions.

1). Run Odin 3 v1.8? (it should be included with the rom - if it is not there do a search on xdadevelopers website - link below step 11) (it does not install because it is a stand alone file so it runs as is). In Odin leave everything alone on the left side of the program. On the right side select the files the files your need (it is easy to figure out). Make sure where it says "Phone" you put phone file that says KG3 in the file name.

2). Now TURN OFF YOUR PHONE.

To make sure the phone has turned off take the battery out and put it back in.

3). Put your phone in "download mode". If you do not know how to put in "download mode" follow instructions 3a) to 3c).

3a). Put one finger on the "volume down" button and leave your finger holding down the button.
3b). Put another finger on the "menu" button (also known as the "home" button) and leave your finger holding down the button.
MAKE SURE THOSE FINGERS ARE STILL HOLDING THOSE BUTTONS DOWN!
3c). Now put another finger on the power button and hold down until you see a "yellow triangle" with a picture in it and below the triangle is says "downloading" you know you have put your phone in "download mode" which is where you are suppose to be so you can now let go of all those buttons (tip - let go of the power button first). If you don't get it the first time keep trying. It took me four tries to get it right.

4). Now plug your phone into the computer.

5). You know you have done all the instructions up to now right when in Odin on the left where is says "id:com" is yellow. If yellow hit the "start" button on the right. When it is done doing its thing your phone will reboot on its own. On the first reboot after installing the rom it will take a while to reboot so don't worry.

6). Unplug your phone from the computer.

7). Once your phone has completely rebooted and looks normal TURN OFF YOUR PHONE.

8). In Odin select "reset".

9). In Odin where it says PDA put the CF Root file.

10). Put your phone in "download mode" again and plug your phone into your computer and in Odin select "start".

11). Once your phone has rebooted check your apps for a file called Superuser. If it is there you have successfully rooted your phone and upgraded to Android 2.3.6.

After this if you want to install CM or another distro

Put one finger on the "volume up" button and leave your finger holding down the button.
Put another finger on the "menu" button (also known as the "home" button) and leave your finger holding down the button.
MAKE SURE THOSE FINGERS ARE STILL HOLDING THOSE BUTTONS DOWN!
Now put another finger on the power button and hold down until you see a menu then scroll up or down until you select (using the menu button) the zip file you want (ie. CM...zip) then install gapps...zip then reboot.

If you need to add a different modem use the 3 finger salute then install the modem drivers if they are in a zip file. This is necessary in Canada.

Once you have installed steps 1) to 11) you now can install any other rom you want or you can leave as is like I did. Check out xdadevolpers for roms. If you want ICS or Jelly Bean on your phone click here.

How To Install CyanogenMod

12). For those that want to install CyanogenMod now you download CyanogenMod from their website and copy it to your cellphone (remember where you put it). Also download Google Apps (has Android Market and a bunch of other stuff) and copy it to your cellphone also. DO NOT UNZIP EITHER OF THESE FILES. THEY MUST BE COPIED AS THEY ARE.

13). Put you phone in "recovery mode" (is actually "ClockworkMod Recovery" because CF Root installed "ClockworkMod Recovery" which is different from Samsung's recovery mode which is called 3e).
If you do not know how to put in "recovery mode" follow instructions 13a) to 13c).

13a). Put one finger on the "volume up" button and leave your finger holding down the button.
13b). Put another finger on the "menu" button (also known as the "home" button) and leave your finger holding down the button.
MAKE SURE THOSE FINGERS ARE STILL HOLDING THOSE BUTTONS DOWN!
13c). Now put another finger on the power button and hold down until you see a bunch of small text on your screen then you know you have put your phone in "recovery mode" which is where you are suppose to be so you can now let go of all those buttons (tip - let go of the power button first). If you don't get it the first time keep trying. It took me four tries to get it right.

14). Once the device boots into the ClockworkMod Recovery, use the side volume buttons to move around, and use the menu/home button to select.

15). Select the option to Wipe data/factory reset.

16). Select the option to Wipe cache partition.

17). Select Install zip from sdcard.

18). Select Choose zip from sdcard.

19). Select the CyanogenMod file you copied onto your phone (you do remember where you put it right?)

20). Install the Google Apps by performing steps 17 - 19 again and choosing the Google Apps file

21). Once the installation has finished, select +++++Go Back+++++ to get back to the main menu, and select the Reboot system now option. The Samsung Galaxy S should now boot into CyanogenMod.

Congradulations!
